The Sanctuary
Father's Day usually affords me the benefit of lounging in bed to around noon, flipping from channel to channel to satisfy my ADD. After cycling through the stations a couple of times and finding nothing of interest, I decided to be a little more productive and do some housecleaning on my Netflix "Instant" cue. Upon clearing out a few duds, my attention was drawn to a show called The Sanctuary. Unclear how it was logged in the first place, and after reading it was about paranormals and monsters, i figured I would give it a go. I ended up getting sucked into all 13 episodes.
The show follows the adventures of Dr. Helen Magnus and her team of experts who run the Sanctuary, as they seek out creatures (called "Abnormals") and try to help and learn from them. The abnormals are both dangerous and sublime, and there are instances where they must be either locked up or eliminated for the greater good of the planet. There is some historical context, playing on both mythology and legend, with the supporting cast being made up of noteworthy figures (Nikola Tesla, Dr. James Watson). To compare it to other series, think X-Files and The 4400, and add a sprinkle of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and you might have it.
When taken for what it is, it is a nice little escape for those extended hours of freedom. Check it out if you get the chance.
